Airgun Law

THE LAW

There is no distinction in the uk between airguns and more powerful guns they are all classed as firearms and are governed by the same strict firearms laws. This means that any offence committed can carry a very heavy penalty. To help answer your questions we have listed below the main points for your guidance only. Please note this is not a legal statement and we would suggest that you seek professional legal advice if you wish for further clarification. i.e.BASC, police firearms licensing department or solicitor.

18 years and over
If you are 18 years or older you can purchase an air gun and ammunition and use it where you have permission to shoot.

14-17 years
You may borrow an air rifle and ammunition and can also use an air rifle without supervision on private premises where you have permission to do so.

You cannot:
Receive an airgun as a gift or buy or hire one. Your airgun must be cared for by someone over the age of 18 years, normally a responsible parent or guardian.

Unless supervised by someone over the age of 21 years you are not allowed to have an airgun in a public place and you need a reasonable cause to do so.

14 years and under
You may use an airgun under supervision on private premises with permission from the owner only if the person supervising is 21 years or older. You cannot receive an airgun as a gift or buy or hire one. You can only shoot an airgun under adult supervision at all times.

Trespassing and boundaries
Going onto private land without permission is trespassing and if you are carrying an airgun it becomes armed trespass. This is a very serious offence and carries heavy penalties. It is very important to only shoot where you have the permission of the landowner or tenant.

It is an offence in England and Wales to shoot an airgun within 50 feet of the centre of a highway if this results in somebody being injured, endangered or interrupted. This could occur for example if your garden is close to a public highway and a shot goes astray or ricochets.
